2. Using “Preview Changes

This will open a new tab in your browser, showing you a preview of the edited post. Always check and confirm an edited post using the “Preview Changes” button before you publish to the live server (Step 6, below). If post/page looks correct, simply close the tab and return to the “Edit Page” screen in WordPress for Step 6 (Update).

7. Downloadable file linking

Linking to a downloadable file (Word, PDF, PPTX, XLS, etc) is very similar to adding an image to a post. But instead of inserting the image onto the page, you upload the file (PDF, etc) and acquire this file’s URL from WordPress. You then set this URL as a link to some text (or button, image, etc.) in the post. Adding a downloadable file link has three basic steps: 1) upload the file, 2) copy the URL, and then 3) apply that URL as a link to something on the page (text, button, image, etc).

Step 1 — Upload the PDF/Word file using the ‘Add Media’ button, just as you’d upload an image file.

Step 2 — On the INSERT MEDIA screen, drag-and-drop your PDF/Word file to upload it to WordPress. After it has uploaded, find the “URL” box for that newly uploaded document and highlight the URL (double-click it) to select the entire URL. Copy this URL (command-C). Then simply close the INSERT MEDIA screen by clicking the “x” in the upper right corner. You do not need to click the blue-button “Insert into post” because you do not need to actually insert the PDF/Word file to the page. All you need to do is copy the URL from this INSERT MEDIA screen.

Step 3 — Back on the post’s edit screen, highlight the text (or button, image, etc) that you wish to be the download link. Then click the “Link tool” button in the toolbar. Paste the URL into the entry field and hit the blue “arrow” button to apply the link to the object (text, button, image, etc). Now, whenever that object is clicked by a user, it will start a download of the file based on the URL you entered for the link.

As a last step, preview your edit to make sure the link properly downloads the file when clicked. Then publish the changed page using the blue “Update” button.

8. Using Clicky

You can access the Clicky analytics data from the top (black) menu or by using this link:

Step 1 — Set the time-span for which you want to see analytics using the date drop-down menu in the upper right corner of the Clicky screen:

Step 2 — click on one of the topics in the gray menu bar… or expand any item for great details or a report.
